A Note On The Importance Of Taking A Break

I don’t think people give taking a break enough credit, if I’m completely honest. People don’t talk about it, because they’re fixated on the hustle and bustle of life and constantly striving for better. I think that some people see taking a break as a form of defeat. Society has embedded this in our brains; the need to always be doing something. Whether it be forging a career path, bettering our skill set or being social, there’s always something that can be done that takes priority over idle time. It’s so great that people are motivated, but bad in the sense that they feel guilt over being human and needing a break now and then. It needs to stop.

A Break Is A Necessary Thing

I’m going to break the stigma of using idle time to relax and enjoy things. My parents are taking a long weekend in Edinburgh this week, which I’d love to be joining them on. But since I have a few days of annual leave left over to see me through the remainder of the year, I’m using them. My Friday fell yesterday, and now I’ve gained myself a five day weekend. No work, just some time to rest up, relax and enjoy. Work has been extra mental lately, and I’ve been using every spare moment to keep up with my blog. My posts have been so sporadic in the last few weeks. So you can probably tell that life’s been catching up with me. Believe me, I’m trying. But like I said, sometimes taking a break is really necessary, and this is one of those times.

Planning On Having No Plans

I’m currently on a train to Belfast, and I have no idea what’s on the agenda for the next five days. Usually, I’m the kind of person who has their time planned to a T. This is definitely because I work so much that my spare time is completely limited. Going out of my way to take a break has somewhat freed me from this mindset. Of course I’m still going to utilise my time, but I can do so at my own pace. And I can do it without the pressure of trying to achieve everything at once. At times, the pressure of trying to achieve too much completely demotivates me, ironically allowing me to achieve nothing at all. Yet another sign that taking a break now and then is an entirely necessary thing.

The Importance Of Finding Balance In Life

My gorgeous pal Emma wrote a post recently about finding balance in her life, and I couldn’t agree more with her points. Being busy is awesome, but resting up and recovering is nothing but a good thing, too. We have to balance the hustle with the idle in order to truly prosper and enjoy life to the full. And I don’t think it’s shameful to admit that. It’s honest, and true, and again, completely necessary. Unless you’re a robot. But I don’t think we’re that far into the future yet… Moral of this post, take a break. You’ve earned it, and you deserve it.
